ANADARKO'S REDSKIN THEATER
ANADARKO — As we mentioned when we officially launched this series yesterday, we're starting close to home here in Caddo County. As the series continues, we'll see where the road takes us from there.
So today, we're traveling back in time to 1947 to take a look at one of Anadarko's most recognizable historic landmarks: the Redskin Theater.
Located at 221 W. Broadway Street, the Redskin theater first opened its doors to the public on February 12th, 1947. The building itself was designed by a Dallas architect, Jack Corgan, while the actual construction work was completed by Cowan Construction Company out of Shawnee.
What might look like an old theater to some people is actually a fascinating piece of local history. The building was designed with special details that reflected both the era and the community. Decorative tiles featuring arrow designs helped guide visitors inside toward the lobby and concession area. And once you step into the lobby itself, the walls feature beautiful Native American artwork by Maurice Bedoka.
The main theater auditorium features vintage-style stadium seating and was built to seat up to 815 guests. There's even an old-fashioned cry room tucked away at the top of the theater for parents who wanted to enjoy a movie date night while bringing their little ones along.
And one of the coolest parts are the beautiful murals that cover the walls throughout the rest of the theater. The artwork was created by Cheyenne artist Archie Blackowl.
One of our favorite details inside the theater is a quote left behind by Archie Blackowl that still carries a very powerful message for us today:
"Leave a mark. Put something down so that when the young people see it, they will understand."
That's kind of what this entire series is about. It's about preserving these places, sharing their stories, and making sure the generations that come after us understand where they came from.
And nearly 80 years after the theater first opened its doors, that message is still being carried forward.
According to reports available online, the Caddo Nation has since purchased the Redskin Theater and plans to preserve its rich cultural history, ensuring this historic landmark remains part of the community's story for generations to come. As of 2025, the building was undergoing an architectural assessment to determine what renovations and repairs may be needed. Once that assessment is complete, the Caddo Nation plans to begin restoration work with the goal of bringing the theater back to full operational capacity.
We think that's pretty awesome, y'all. Not only does it preserve an important piece of Anadarko's history, but it also helps ensure future generations will be able to experience and appreciate it for themselves.
We tip our hats to the Caddo Nation for making sure this piece of Anadarko's story isn't lost to time. We can't wait to see the finished restoration and step inside once the theater is ready to welcome guests again.
So, tell us, did you ever watch a movie at the Redskin Theater? If so, what was it? We'd love to hear your memories and stories from the theater back in the day.
