GATEWAY TO HELL? THE LEGEND OF THE PURPLE CHURCH
SPENCER – Since we've been doing a deep dive into local legends and hauntings, you've probably already figured out that we truly believe in this spooky shit. Like many of you, some of our staff have experienced things firsthand. Things that simply still can't be explained.
And today, we're branching out a little beyond Caddo County because Oklahoma is full of strange places, creepy legends, and scary stories that have been passed down for generations. There are way too many paranormal locations across our state not to talk about them.
So, of course when people started telling us about a place known as the “Purple Church”, we had to see what all the fuss was about. And let us tell you, the stories surrounding this place are enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
So let's get ready to go down this rabbit hole together as we explore the legend of the Purple Church in Spencer. And for real, the name is a little misleading because it had us picturing some giant purple church sitting in the middle of nowhere. But nope. It's not a church, and it's definitely not purple.
From what we've been able to find online, the Purple Church consists of a concrete tunnel and a set of steps leading down into what appears to be an old cellar. At one point in time, however, this wasn't just a creepy ass cellar. There was reportedly a full structure standing there before it was destroyed by fire, now leaving only these remnants behind.
According to local legends, the structure that once stood there was used by people who practiced witchcraft and other occult rituals. So basically, dark arts-type shit. Some of the stories we came across even claim that animal sacrifices took place there.
Now, whether any of that is actually true is anyone's guess. But according to the local legend, the townsfolk eventually found out what was supposedly going on there and weren't exactly thrilled about it. The story goes that one night they snuck onto the property and burned the building to the ground.
And the name "Purple Church" comes from what many people have found inside over the years. The cellar walls have been covered in purple spray-painted pentagrams, symbols, and graffiti, giving the location its infamous nickname. Some locals have even referred to it as a gateway to hell. Whether that's true or not, just typing it gives us chills.
For decades, stories about the Purple Church have circulated all across Oklahoma. Tucked away in the woods, many people believe it's one of the most haunted places in the state. People have claimed to hear strange noises, see things they can't explain, and even feel like something was watching them from the darkness.
According to numerous paranormal stories and investigators, the fire that allegedly destroyed the original structure didn't put an end to the strange activity as the townspeople had hoped. Some visitors have reported hearing voices where no one was present, seeing shadowy figures lurking among the trees, and experiencing an overwhelming feeling that they were not alone. Some of the most creepysome stories even involve people claiming they were chased through the woods by something they could hear, but never actually see. That’s terrifying.
But one of the more disturbing legends surrounding this place claims that those who are brave enough to descend the steps into the old cellar and manage to make their way past what some people believe to be animal remains from sacrifices may encounter a dark or demonic presence that clearly does not welcome visitors. Of course, it's important to note that these are stories and claims that have circulated for years, and we cannot independently verify them.
As of today, the Purple Church is reportedly located on private property, so please do not trespass if you're tempted to go looking for it. Trust us, it's not worth catching a trespassing charge and potentially meeting a scary-ass demon at the same time.
Now, are any of these stories actually true? We don't know. But best believe this is one place we're not exactly in a hurry to visit. If there really is a demonic entity hanging around down there, we're going to respectfully mind our business.
So, have you ever been there? If so, what did you experience? And if you've never visited, what stories have you heard about the Purple Church over the years?
