OUIJA BOARDS — WHOSE BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT TO START TALKING TO THE DEAD?

ANADARKO — We were listening to a podcast about Ouija boards this morning, and it piqued our interest. It's something we've always been curious about, but never personally messed with because, to be real, we're too chicken shit to ever touch one.

That is one we are going to respectfully sit out and not test in the name of research because if something starts spelling out our names, we're grabbing our keys, leaving the house, and letting whatever's in there have the mortgage. Nope. Y'all can have that.

That being said, we've heard all kinds of stories over the years from people who swear these things moved on their own, spelled out answers nobody in the room should've known, or just did some creepy shit they still can't explain. Whether you think it's spirits, people's minds playing tricks on them, or something else entirely, there's no denying that Ouija boards have earned a rep for creeping people the hell out and giving them stories they'll be telling for years.

And since we're naturally curious, we wanted to know how these things even came into existence in the first place and whose bright-ass idea it was to start trying to have conversations with the dead.

So, from what we could find during our deep dive, it appears that Ouija boards became popular in the late 1800's and were originally marketed as a "talking board" parlor game. But, you know how people are. Somebody must have eventually looked at it and thought, "You know what would make game night more interesting? Trying to contact the dead."

And supposedly it's said that the name "Ouija" came from the board itself. According to the story, the people who created it asked what it wanted to be called, and the board spelled out "Ouija."

So that's about as far as our research goes when it comes to Ouija boards, because we ain't trying to accidentally conjure up Satan himself. Curiosity got us this far, but self-preservation is taking it from here.

And please, don't go running to Target to buy one just for the hell of it after reading this. Now, y'all are going to do whatever y'all want anyway, and that's between you and whatever starts answering back. But we're firm believers in not opening doors that were closed for a reason.

Now, for those of y'all who have actually messed with one of these, we have questions.

Did anything happen, or was everybody just pushing the thing around? Give us your stories, because we're curious enough to ask questions, but not curious enough to participate.

Drop it in the comments below.
