THE HISTORICAL STONE LION INN
GUTHRIE — Ok, we know some of y’all have been patiently waiting for this one to drop. Today, we are going to talk about the Stone Lion Inn and the history behind this very cool and historic place in Guthrie.
According to TravelOK, the Stone Lion Inn was built in 1907, and it’s known for its beautiful Victorian architecture. Located at 1016 Warner Ave in Guthrie, this home was originally built for the Houghton family and their twelve children. According to public records, the mansion consists of 5,347 square feet. Allegedly, the third floor has been commonly reported to be the spot with the most paranormal activity.
It’s also been reported that during the 1920s, it served as the Smith-Gooch Funeral Home for a period of approximately eight years, and the original embalming table that was once used when it operated as a funeral home during that time period is reported to still be at the inn to this day. According to Professor Caleb Lack on YouTube, it is being used as a bar in the Inn’s parlor room. That’s pretty cool in our opinion.
Today, it serves as a bed and breakfast where visitors can select from a total of six different themed rooms and even add on a special "murder mystery" package to their stay. Not only that, but the grounds also have pecan trees, beautiful flowers, and lilac bushes. This place, even though the lore surrounding it is that it’s haunted, sounds so serene and peaceful.
According to Hauntedrooms.com, Becky Luker purchased the mansion in 1986 with the intent to make it into a bed and breakfast. It was reported that during the period of time that the home was being renovated, unexplained and strange noises could be heard, along with doors opening and closing by themselves. It’s also been said that Becky’s son, before going to bed, would put all of his toys away neatly, and when we would wake up in the morning, the toys would be moved and spread across his room.
Several people have alleged that the inn is haunted by the daughter of the Houghton family, Augusta. She tragically died from an illness she contracted in the home, and it’s been reported that visitors have seen her casually strolling down the halls of the inn. Other people have claimed to have seen her father in several places throughout the inn as well, usually puffing on his tobacco pipe. Old habits die hard, apparently. We kid. We don’t blame him one bit. Anyway...
And for those of you who would love to own a home like this, it’s your lucky day because it is actually for sale right now. So y’all should definitely go check out the photos. From everything we’ve seen, it’s absolutely gorgeous. Just type the address into Google, and the listing will pop up. We also spoke to the listing agent and obtained her permission to use her photo in our reporting, and got to chat with her a little bit about the property.
So, there you have the short and sweet history of the Stone Lion Inn. We can’t help but wonder who its next owner will be and what their plans will be for it. but what we do know is that whoever ends up owning it will be the caretaker of a really cool piece of Oklahoma history. One can only dream, amiright?
