OSBI TAKES OVER INVESTIGATION AFTER WOMAN DIES IN JAIL

CANADIAN COUNTY, OKLA. (TUC) — Last Monday, Crystal Nicole Mason was arrested by officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department and booked into the Canadian County Jail during the early morning hours.

According to the police report, officers stopped a vehicle at an intersection near the Interstate 40 and South Morgan Rd after learning it had been reported stolen out of Clinton. Investigators say there were two people inside the vehicle: the driver and Crystal Mason, who was riding in the passenger seat. During the stop, officers also reported finding a small tin containing a substance they believed to be meth.

Both Crystal and the driver were then taken into custody and to the Canadian County Jail. According to the jail roster, Crystal was booked on one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Tragically, later that same day, detention staff were passing out meals when they found Crystal unresponsive inside her cell. Jail staff immediately began emergency response efforts and requested medical assistance, but sadly she was pronounced dead a short time later.

At this point, the cause of Crystal's death has not been released. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) has taken over the investigation and is working to determine exactly what happened.

We also think it's important to note and remember that behind every headline is a real person. The allegations against Crystal were matters for the legal process, but she was also someone's mother, someone's daughter, and someone who was so loved.

According to Lockstone Funeral Home, Crystal was a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and grew up in Weatherford and was the proud mother of four children. As a young girl, she was a talented champion powwow dancer and proudly served as a princess for several powwows and tribal organizations. Those who knew Crystal remember her as someone who could always make people laugh. She had a warm personality that naturally drew people in and had a way of making everyone around her feel welcome.

And as this investigation continues, it's important to remember that no matter what allegations someone is facing, every person in custody deserves the appropriate medical care in a timely manner if they need it.

We hope this investigation helps provides answers about what happened and leaves no unanswered questions for her family. We will continue following this and keep y'all updated as more information becomes available by investigators.
