UPDATE — SUSPECT NOW IN CUSTODY | BREAKING: POLICE SEARCH FOR DEADLY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. (TUC) — Earlier this morning, we shared the heartbreaking news that a woman lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter in northwest Oklahoma City.

We now have an update. The Oklahoma City Police Department says a man has been arrested in connection with the deadly hit-and-run. Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old John Michael Chavez. He has been booked on complaints of second-degree murder, leaving the scene of a fatality collision, and aggravated driving under the influence.

According to investigators, the woman was riding her electric scooter westbound in the outside lane around 2:15 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle. Police say she became trapped underneath the vehicle and was dragged before the driver fled the scene instead of stopping to help.

It's hard to even imagine what this woman's final moments must have been like. Our hearts are with her family, her friends, and everyone who knew and loved her.

And we will never understand why someone would choose to get behind the wheel while under the influence. It's a decision that can change lives in an instant, and this heartbreaking tragedy is a painful reminder of just how devastating the consequences can be.

This remains an active investigation, and authorities have not yet released the identity of the female victim. As always, we'll continue following this case and keep y'all updated as more information is released by law enforcement.
