A VIRAL TREND WITH DEADLY CONSEQUENCES

OKLAHOMA — There’s a new “trend” going around on social media that is extremely dangerous and can even be fatal. Many health officials are warning parents that there has been a rise in hospitalizations and even deaths linked to the so-called “Benadryl Challenge.”

From what we researched online, this challenge reportedly involves individuals taking large amounts of Benadryl in an attempt to experience hallucinations or a “high.” Medical experts warn that taking excessive amounts of this over-the-counter medication can have serious consequences, including seizures, heart problems, loss of consciousness, and even death.

According to ABC News, poison control centers are reporting a significant increase in calls involving teenagers who have consumed large amounts of Benadryl. According to America’s Poison Centers, the number of cases involving teens has alarmingly doubled compared to the same time last year.

We know teenagers don't always think things through, and we've all done dumb stuff growing up. But this isn't one of those harmless trends that ends with an embarrassing story later. This one is very serious that has already affected a lot of families in Oklahoma and nationwide.

Just because Benadryl can be purchased over the counter without a prescription doesn't mean it's harmless. Like any medication, it can be dangerous when it’s misused, and in some cases, can take a life.

Parents, it might be worth having a conversation with your kids tonight. We know social media trends come and go, but this is one trend that belongs in the trash. No internet challenge is worth risking your life over.
